About dry brush paintings

"Dry brush" is the way of dabbing paint on the repoussed surface (rough paper, canvas) by a brush which is squeezed at approximately 95% i.e. it's practically dry. If a dry brush is used over a wet paint or pastel it's possible to achieve very smooth passages. As the result the edges blur and become smoother.

"Dry brush" is not a medium but a method of painting portraits. It's used by the most skilled artists. Given technique gives a possibility to depict individual features of a person in more detail. (Look closely at the details of the portrait executed by an artist Victoria Vlady)

"Dry brush" technique occupies a special place among a lot of various kinds of painting. For a long time artists use this technique in painting from nature and in a sketch.

The portraits of the leaders of that time had to convey as much as possible the spirits and energetic to people who contemplate them. Thanks to this "a dry brush" technique became widely-spread in executing the paintings.

Portraits being executed by means of this technique are distinguished by a particular precision and strokes. They convey psychological characteristic and reflect the mood of a depicted person that makes them very emotional.
